Sustaining White Bear Lake: Community Initiatives for Environmental Resilience

White Bear Lake, Minnesota, is renowned for its picturesque landscapes and vibrant community. As environmental challenges mount, local initiatives are playing a pivotal role in fostering sustainability and resilience.

Environmental Advisory Commission

The city’s Environmental Advisory Commission advises the City Council on policies related to sustainability, climate change, and natural environment protection. The commission studies and advocates for regulations concerning waste, water, resource, and energy management practices that are scientifically sound. Residents are encouraged to adopt sustainable practices through education and community events.

GreenStep Cities Program

Since 2011, White Bear Lake has participated in the Minnesota GreenStep Cities Program, a voluntary initiative aimed at helping cities achieve sustainability and quality-of-life goals. The program encompasses 29 best practices across five categories: Buildings and Lighting, Land Use, Transportation, Environmental Management, and Economic and Community Development. White Bear Lake is currently recognized as a Step Four City and is working towards Step Five.

Climate-Smart Municipalities Exchange

In 2019, White Bear Lake joined the Climate-Smart Municipalities German Exchange Program, partnering with Lüdenscheid, Germany. This collaboration focuses on accelerating progress toward a cleaner and more efficient energy footprint, emphasizing the shared belief that “Together, We Are Smarter.” The program is administered by the University of Minnesota’s Institute on the Environment.

Stormwater Management

With an abundance of surface water resources, including numerous lakes and wetlands, White Bear Lake has implemented policies and ordinances to protect water quality from polluted stormwater runoff and prevent flooding. The city’s stormwater management ordinance aligns with state statutes and local watershed regulations, ensuring the preservation of these vital resources.

Community Engagement

Community involvement is crucial in these environmental efforts. Residents can participate in various programs, such as the Environmental Resources Expo, held annually on the last Thursday in July during Marketfest. This event offers opportunities to learn about water quality, conservation, pollinators, native plants, composting, renewable energy, recycling, and more. Additionally, the Lake Links Association promotes safe routes for active mobility around White Bear Lake, enhancing both environmental and community well-being.

Through these initiatives, White Bear Lake exemplifies a commitment to environmental stewardship, ensuring a sustainable and resilient community for future generations.
