Embracing Our Heritage: The Enduring Spirit of White Bear Lake

White Bear Lake, nestled just 20 miles north of the Minneapolis/Saint Paul International Airport, is a community that beautifully blends its rich history with a vibrant present. With a population nearing 25,000, our town offers the charm of a small lakeside community while being in close proximity to the Twin Cities.

A Storied Past

Our area was originally inhabited by the Dakota and Ojibwe peoples, who utilized the land for hunting and harvesting. The name “White Bear Lake” and “Manitou,” meaning habitation of the Great Spirit, originate from Native American legends. One such tale speaks of a Sioux maiden and a Chippewa brave, whose love story is intertwined with the lake’s history.

In the late 19th century, White Bear Lake transformed into a popular resort destination. The extension of the Lake Superior and Mississippi Railroad in 1868 made the area more accessible, turning a three-hour horse and buggy ride from St. Paul into a twenty-minute train trip. This accessibility led to the establishment of numerous resorts and hotels along the lake’s shores, attracting visitors seeking leisure and recreation.

A Thriving Present

Today, White Bear Lake continues to thrive, offering a plethora of community events that celebrate our heritage and foster a strong sense of community. Annual events like Manitou Days and Marketfest bring residents and visitors together to enjoy parades, live music, and local arts and crafts. These gatherings not only provide entertainment but also strengthen the bonds within our community.

Our downtown area is a testament to the town’s growth and vitality. With a variety of shops, restaurants, and cultural venues, it serves as a hub for both residents and visitors. The Lakeshore Players Theatre and the White Bear Center for the Arts offer cultural enrichment, while local businesses provide unique shopping and dining experiences.

Looking Ahead

As we honor our past and celebrate our present, it’s essential to look toward the future. The recent unification of White Bear Lake Area High School into a single campus in downtown White Bear Lake is a significant step forward. This development not only enhances educational opportunities for our youth but also contributes to the vibrancy of our town center.

White Bear Lake’s enduring spirit is evident in our commitment to preserving our history while embracing growth and change. As we continue to build upon our rich heritage, we ensure that our community remains a welcoming and dynamic place for generations to come.
